Annual Word Fest week begins April 13

National Poetry Month is being celebrated  with the 2014 Albany Word Fest, April 13 through 19, with a week of poetry and spoken word.

The second edition of Albany Poets’ literary journal, Up the River, will be launched  Sunday, April 13, at 6 p.m. with  the Word Fest Kickoff and Up The River Launch Party at McGeary’s, home of Poets Speak Loud, 4 Clinton Square, Albany. A cocktail party and a special reading with contributors of Up The River is planned.

Other events are:

Monday, April 14, 7 p.m.: “Let Your Voice Be Heard,” at

The Arts Center of the Capital Region, 265 River St., Troy.
Using poetry and spoken word, tell your story, your passion, your dreams, in your own words. This event is  part of Albany Poet’s youth event for Word Fest Week 2014; young writers are  invited to submit.

Tuesday, April 15, 7 p.m.:  “Nitty Gritty Slam,”  a return of the Haiku Battle, at The Low Beat, 335 Central Ave., Albany. Admission is $5 / $3 with student ID. (18 + / 21 to drink).

Wednesday, April 16, 7 p.m.:  Poetry, Music, Spoken Word Showcase at Pauly’s Hotel, 337 Central Ave., Albany. An evening of local and regional poetry, music, and spoken word.

Thursday, April 17, 7 p.m.: Third Thursday Poetry Night at the Social Justice Center, 33 Central Ave., Albany. Dan Wilcox hosts this open mic for poetry and spoken word featuring poets from The College of Saint Rose.

Friday, April 18, 7 p.m.:  Word Fest Open Mic at UAG Gallery, 247 Lark St., Albany. The annual Word Fest Open Mic hosted by Albany Poets takes place from 7 p.m.  to midnight with sessions for groups and featured poets from Woodstock to Saratoga, plus Metroland’s Best Poets of 2014. Signup online is under way at http://www.albanywordfest.com through  Monday, April 14.

Saturday, April 19, 7 p.m.: Word Fest Invitational Slam at The Linda, WAMC’s Performing Arts Studio, 339 Central Ave., Albany.  Poetry slam teams from New York, New Jersey, Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania come together to close out the Word Fest and compete for prizes and bragging rights in anticipation of the  National Poetry Slam in August. Admission is $10 in advance online, $12 at door. (18 + / 21 to drink).

Additionally, all throughout the week, Albany Poets will be publishing local poetry on their website as part of the Word Fest Online Open Mic. Poets who wish to participate are encouraged to send their poems to albanypoets@gmail.com with “Online Open Mic” in the subject line, starting Sunday, April 6.

The 2014 Albany Word Fest is sponsored by Albany Poets, Hudson Valley Writers Guild, Frequency North, Urban Guerrilla Theatre, The Low Beat, McGeary’s, and the very generous donations of supporters of the arts in upstate New York.
