Benefit for retired racehorse at Nanola
A fun-filled party to support Old Friends at Cabin Creek, a retirement farm for thoroughbred racehorses, will be held Friday, Aug. 18, from 7 to 10 p.m., at Nanola restaurant, 2639 Route 9, Malta. Tickets are $50 and include a buffet; a cash bar will be available. Tickets can be purchased at Old Friends at Cabin Creek or by calling 518-698-2377.
“Rock N Rollin’ for Retired Racehorses,” sponsored by Sackatoga Stable and West Point Thoroughbreds, offers music provided by the band Blue Hand Luke, who recorded the song “Funny Cide” in 2003 during the Sackatoga Stable gelding’s run for the Triple Crown.
All proceeds from ticket sales will go to support Old Friends at Cabin Creek, located at 483 Sand Hill Road in Greenfield Center. Nanola restaurant is donating the buffet; Sackatoga Stable and West Point Thoroughbreds are underwriting the cost of the band.
Sackatoga Stable has been a longtime provider of funding to support aftercare for retired thoroughbreds. Each time a new Sackatoga Stable partnership forms, a contribution is made to Old Friends at Cabin Creek to support its operations. A former Sackatoga Stable racehorse, Doc N Roll, recently became a resident at the farm.
Jack Knowlton, operating manager of Sackatoga Stable, has been a leader in bringing awareness to the need for all segments of the thoroughbred industry to provide financial support to racehorse retirement organizations.
West Point Thoroughbreds takes aftercare very seriously, establishing the Congie Black and Gold Fund to help care for the stable’s retired runners. Each new partnership formed, and each race start, contribute money to the fund to help pay for retraining, rehabilitating and finding new homes when horses are retired.
Mark and JoAnn Pepper started Old Friends at Cabin Creek in 2009, a dream come true for JoAnn to care for retired racehorses. The farm currently houses 16 retired thoroughbred racehorses, including Travers winner Will’s Way and two-time Whitney winner Commentator.
