Gershons memories flavor ‘Pickle Recipe’
The movie, “The Pickle Recipe,” billed as a “salty comedy” about a plot to steal a grandmother’s famous pickle recipe, will be shown Saturday, Dec. 30, at 7:15 p.m., at the Schenectady Jewish Community Center, 2565 Balltown Road, Schenectady.
Accompanying the film, a discussion will be led by Antonia Lauria, who will share memories of her father Tony and life at Gershons’s, a Union Street tradition in Schenectady for more than 60 years.
On Sunday, Dec.31, at 2 p.m., the 97-minute film only will be shown.
In the movie’s plot, Rose’s closely guarded pickle recipe has kept Irv’s Deli a popular eatery for decades. Now her grandson Joey schemes to get the secret recipe and make a few much-needed bucks as his daughter’s Bat Mitzvah approaches. In the stellar ensemble of character actors: Lynn Cohen plays matriarch Rose and guardian of the family secret; Toronto comic Jon Dore is Joey; and hapless David Paymer is Uncle Morty, whose conniving plants the seed for Joey’s plot. Directed by Michael Manasseri. Nominated for Panavision Spirit Award for Independent Cinema, Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
The film is shown as part of the Schenectady Jewish Film Festival which reviews hundreds of award- winning films with Jewish themes from around the world in order to bring in the best movies.
