Hazardous waste program in Schenectady

Schenectady County residents can drop off unwanted hazardous chemicals from around their homes on Saturday, Aug. 23, from 8 a.m. to noon,  at the Schenectady County Yard Waste Composting Facility and Resident Recycling Center, 24 Hetcheltown Road, Schenectady.

Items being accepted  for safe and environmentally sound disposal  include fluorescent lighting, paints, solvents, drain de-cloggers, lawn and garden chemicals, automobile fluids (except motor oil) and pool chemicals.

Items not accepted include: used motor oil, computer or other electronic components, medical waste, smoke detectors, grill sized propane cylinders, firearms, explosives, ammunition, asbestos or any empty cans or containers.

Future dates for household hazardous waste collection program are Sept. 25 and Nov. 15.
