Lindbergh talk, big band dance at airport fest
Aviator Charles Lindbergh flew to the Capital Region 90 years ago for the grand opening of the Schenectady County Aerodrome, now the Schenectady County Airport. The anniversary of that event will be celebrated on July 29 at the Empire State Aerosciences Museum, located at Schenectady County Airport, 250 Rudy Chase Drive, Glenville.
The day includes a pancake breakfast 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.; and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Empire State Aerosciences Museum tours and helicopter rides, antique autos including Lindbergh’s Franklin Airman, and free admission to the museum. Donations for parking will be accepted.
A modern-day Lindbergh, in the personage of Tim Clark, arrives at 1 p.m. in a vintage aircraft at the now-named Schenectady County Airport. Clark’s presentation on the life of Lindbergh, made famous when he flew solo over the Atlantic in the summer of 1927, will be at 2 p.m. Clark is a former B-52 pilot.
Admission is free.
A pancake breakfast will be held July 29 at 8:30 a.m. The day ends with ESAM’s Big Band Hangar Dance featuring the music of The Georgie Wonders 22-piece Orchestra and catering by TJ’s Flightline Pub. 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.: Performance by the Musicians of Ma’alwyck;
7:30 p.m.: Presentation on Charles Lindbergh’s life by “Modern Day Lindbergh” Tim Clark.
The Museum offers visitors a variety of enjoyable and educational experiences dedicated to aviation, including interpretive exhibits, a spectacular collection of restored aircraft, the state’s largest aviation library, as well as education programs. Summer hours. Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day except Monday.
