Maple producers offer weekend tours
Maple syrup production will be featured during two open house weekends March 22 and 23 and March 29 and 30, at 17 sugar houses participating throughout Washington, Warren, Saratoga, Rensselaer, Fulton and Montgomery counties.
A tree-tapping ceremony to launch the event will be held at noon Friday, March 21, at Dry Brook Sugar House, 432 Chambers Road, Salem, phone (518) 854-7651.
Free tours of about 20 sugarhouses and demonstrations of maple syrup production will be offered during tours hours, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each tour day. Signs will be placed along roadsides to direct motorists to the sugarhouses.
The Upper Hudson region is among the biggest syrup producing areas in the state. Maple season generally runs through the end of March.
The events are being sponsored by the Upper Hudson Maple Producers Association.
