Menands estate is Vanguard Showhouse

The Vanguard Designer Showhouse, a showcase for local interior designers and an annual fundraiser for the Albany Symphony, opens Tuesday, 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Featured are the works of 13  designers who decorated the rooms at 14 Pheasant Lane in Menands. The theme this year is, “A New Chapter for an Old Estate.” For information, visit http://vanguard-aso.org/pdf/SH2017/SH%20particulars.pdf/.

 The house was built in the 1950s when Albany pediatrician Edward Goodwin bought a circa-1813 house in Clifton Park that was threatened by rising water. He dismantled the home and used some of its interior elements in a new home built on Pheasant Lane. Dr. Goodwin will present at history of the house on May 11 at 5:30 p.m.
The house will be open six days a week (closed on Mondays) from May 2 to May 21. The hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursdays, 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.;  Saturdays, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and  Sundays, noon to 5 p.m. Admission is $18. (Watch for $3 off coupons in the Times Union). Groups of eight or more, $12 admission with reservations- call 518-258-4414. The last ticket will be sold an hour before the house closes for the day.
Special events are also planned, including designer-guided tours of rooms on May 4, May 12 and May 17 at 11 a.m., and May 13 at 2 p.m.; Designer Day to meet the designers in their rooms, May 5, May 11, May 16, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.;  cheese tasting hosted by The Honest Weight Food Coop on  May 13 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. A meal preparation demonstration will be offered by cooks from Different Drummer’s Kitchen on  May 19 from 2 to 3 p.m. Albany Massage Professionals will give free mini-massages on  May 10 and May 17,  1 to 3 p.m. Staff from Rumors Hair Salon and Spa will do hairstyling demonstrations  May 16 at 10:30 a.m. and a skin care demonstration  May 18 at 5:30 p.m. Floral demonstrations by Ambiance Floral and Events will be offered May 6 at 11 a.m. and May 11 at 2 p.m. 
Guests will be seated for the showhouse cafe luncheon ($15) , catered by Ben and Bill’s Deli,  Tuesday through Friday at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.  For reservations and menu, call 258-4414.

There is no parking at the house or on Pheasant Lane. A shuttle will take visitors from the parking lot at the former Broadway Diner at 563 Broadway in Menands.
