Tour Olana by foot or in open-air vehicle
The Olana State Historic Site has launched its 2016 season by introducing regular public tours of the historic landscape in Hudson.
Guided group tours along Olana’s carriage roads will be held through Nov. 6 in an open-air electric vehicle, shown in photo. A self-guided version on foot is available through a cellphone app.
Olana’s 250-acre landscape is one of Frederic Church’s greatest works of art, and is one of the most intact artist-designed landscapes in the country.
Church, a well-known Hudson River School painter, created a large-scale composition that included a working and ornamental farm, varied architectural elements, an artificial lake, native woodlands and more than five miles of carriage roads, so that visitors could move through and experience Olana’s crafted foreground against a backdrop of far-reaching views.
The landscape tours mark a milestone in the Olana Partnership’s ongoing mission to restore and interpret Church’s legacy. Several specialty events and hikes in the landscape will be offered to highlight the inaugural season. For information, visit http://www.olana.org/.
